I highly doubt that this was what Marty Robbins had in mind when he sang 'El Paso!' It went from small little border town featured in a few stories to full-fledged metropolis! We crossed the border about 30 minutes ago and stopped at a Starbucks to get a couple of shots in us and to borrow the internets for a minute or two.
We got up fairly late this morning - around 11. We figured we could do more driving in the dark because it wouldn't be as warm. We made it clear through Arizona and New Mexico in a few hours. It's amazing how far you can go in a few hours when you're not in Alaska. The Motel 6 we stayed at last night looked like auction surplus from the Spanish Inquisition. The walls were whitewashed brick and the ceilings were low enough that I almost hit my head just getting into the shower.
We had our first bout of mechanical trouble today. In my morning inspection of Elvira (what I have christened my truck due to her color) revealed her fanbelt was a little cracked and needed replaced. We made it to Tuscon and and went to Downtown Automotive. They were *really* nice to us and replaced the fan belt in less than 20 minutes. They didn't even charge us normal labor and it ended up costing us only $100.00. I wish I could take credit for finding them on my own, but once again our unwavering TomTom faithfully pulled up their location and sent us excellent directions. I thought he was taking us through a roundabout way, but it turned out to be an absolutely beautiful drive through downtown Tuscon. It is almost a Bohemian diamond in the rough - a gleaming beacon in the night. A return trip is definitely going to be happening.
I must apologize for no pictures... we have taken enough to make Kodak faint with exasperation, but getting them uploaded to my computer is kind of a pain. I will post some tonight when we get to whatever hotel we end up staying at... or possibly when we stop for dinner.
Time to get back on the road again, my friends and family. Rest assured my thoughts are with you and I miss you terribly!
