Yesterday was my first shift with my regular preceptor on a 24 hour shift.
The day started off fast - we were in the truck bay doing checkout and we barely got into it before we received a call - possible stroke. Since this was my first shift I didn't expect to get to do much other than have my basic skills examined. This is how it was for the first couple of calls, then I actually got to do more questioning. By the fifth call - an older lady with chest pain with difficulty breathing - my preceptor actually let me take lead medic. Lead on my first shift! Sweet! As it happens, though, it turned out not to be a cardiac. Since the pain was reproducible on palpation, I figured it was not cardiac at all - even though she did have a first degree heart block.
Anyway, we had 8 calls yesterday - most of which happened after 11pm so I didn't get much sleep last night. I came back to my hotel and I tried to stay awake, but I just couldn't.
I really like my preceptor. He reminds me a lot of one of the engineers at my department. Another thing I've noticed is that there is someone here who looks like someone I know from back in Alaska, right down to some of the nurses at the hospital. It's freakin weird!
If things continue to go this well, my internship is going to be a hell of a lot of fun! I'll get more pictures and maybe some video tomorrow so I can actually post something more! As for me now, I have a buttload of run reports to write. D:
