Again drove through sparse grassed plains and visited the quiver tree forest (these are strange trees with aloe like folliage on the top).  The bushman used the very light wood to hold their arrows.  Some were hundreds of years old.  The countryside was covered with Euphorbia bushes which the bush used to kill their prey, by dipping the latex from the stems onto their arrow heads.  In travelling in this country you never use the Euphorbia bush to cook food or warm yourself as the poison is airbourne and will kill you. Wild life was abundant, stopping regularly for photographs of the previous animals plus mountain zebra, baboons etc.  Our guide is just great with lots of knowledge.  There are 12 in the group and we have a 28 seater bus so lots of room.
Passed rugged mountains on either side that just rise out of the plain.
Arriving at Canyon Lodge the accommodation was a cross between hobit land and bedrock.  Surrounded by granite boulders many of which were part of each lodge.  Excellent accommodation once again.  The staff sang to us at dinner and they had beautiful voices.
Very very cold at night and you could hear the springbocks walking on the stone pathways.

We again had sundowners on our verandah with Lorraine and second night up onthe boulders.
We had to get up for sunrise at 5.30am which was cool to say the least.  Went out in jeeps again with rugs.  Hot coffee and tea were served in the bush.  We then had a three km walk back to the lodge.
After breakfast we headed for the canyon which is the second biggest in the world after the Grand Canyon.  It was spectacular with the fish river having carved out huge areas.

Sounds like you are having a wonderful time. Very cold and wet in Egmont Terrace Hawthorn.
Essendon Bombers are gone, much to the disappointment of Carol.
Have some sundowners for us!
Love Carol, Richard, Olivia and Marshall.
