Where I stayed
I've talked enough about Bangla Road, the bar scene, the beach, the massage salons, and the hedonistic life.
Now I start talking about my life and what's it all about. My life is about helping people and getting them what they need. First off there's Andre. He came to Thailand to find work. He's been in Phuket for 2 weeks and realizes that this place is too "busy" for him. He's done this before in South America. He's getting older and wants a quieter place. I mention that Nao was looking for a resort manager in Laos
I had sent Chanla copies of the photos I had taken of her during our two days of touring. She sent me an email back. She ended the email with, "Don't forget me". So sweet, but much too young.
I've had numerous chats with Nong, the front desk clerk at the hostel/hotel/Dive Den I have been staying at. We were talking about stuff when there was an English word she couldn't remember and then the conversation ended. I came back later to give her a gift and she stated that she remembered the word that summarized our conversation. The word was respect.
That word was the reason I had decided to give her a gift. She works so hard and she keeps her self respect. I wanted to let her know that "good girls" and hard work should be rewarded and so I gave her $50 US. 1500 baht doesn't go far in this town. It was a simple gift that demonstrated to her that not everyone is looking for something from everyone else. There's more to the story then that. But the small gift made a very big impression on her.
The first night that I met Andre we went out for supper, as previously mentioned. There's much more to the story then that. When Andre arrived in Phuket his taxi driver got lost and had to stop at another hotel to ask for directions. At this hotel Andre met some of the staff and one of the owners, Pranee. Andre ran into one of the staff members later on one of the streets. Being the personable individual that he is he asked if it was OK to use the hotel swimming pool as the Ocean water gives him a rash. No problem. The night we went for this first supper he suggested going to this hotel. We walk there and the restaurant is closed. Staffing issues. We stop at another restaurant nearby.
The following night we head out for supper again. Andre heads to the restaurant from the night before when we decide to try the hotel restaurant that was closed. We're having supper when I meet Pranee, the hotel manager/owner. The three of us chat for a while. Then Andre and I head out for our late night of drinking.
Yesterday afternoon Andre flew off towards Laos. I headed to the beach for a while. Then decided to go out for supper. Why not go somewhere where I might have some good conversation, I think. So I head back to the Andaman Hill Hotel. I'm eating my supper when Pranee shows up. She comes over and says Hi. Sits down and chats for a while. Is busy helping customers. At a table next to me are two lovely Finnish flight attendants on holidays, Katy & Jenny. We chat a while and then they leave.
I'm chatting with Pranee when the flight attendants return. They ask us to join them as they have a big box of wine that they purchased at the duty free to drink. When I tell Katy what I do and discuss the topic of creating our lives with our thoughts she mentions the movie The Secret and the Law of Attraction. She indicates that she lives her life by creating it with her thoughts. She and Jenny have been friends for a couple of years and Jenny is slowly starting to believe that this actually does work.
After a few drinks the girls leave to meet some Finnish Flight attendant friends who are in town on a layover. Pranee closes the restaurant and then invites me to her place for some wine. We chat till after one thirty when I leave and decide to make my way to Bangla Road (the bar strip) to see what it's like at 2am. I stop at the Moon Bar for one drink. There I meet Chris from London and his "friend", Jenny, from Australia. I have another drink as I chat with Chris and Jenny plays the dice game with the waitresses. Chris decides it's time to go to another bar and invites me to come along. We close down this bar at 5am. I'm in bed at 6am.
I stay in bed till noon. I'm not feeling that great. Drank too many different types of alcohol last night. I still haven't finalized my plans. Originally I was supposed to go to Penang in Malaysia prior to stopping in Kuala Lumpur on my way to Singapore. I had asked Nong about taking a bus to Penang and she says that it's a 12-14 hour ride plus the delay at the border. She mentions flying. I check and Air Asia has no flights available though they say they fly there. That's when I decided to stay on Phuket Island a couple of extra days and then fly directly to Kuala Lumpur.
Having thoroughly enjoyed chatting with Pranee last night, I have been having a hard time deciding what to do. Tomorrow is Valentine's Day. Do I stay and get to know her better or let fate decide for me?
I book my flight, get Nong to arrange for a taxi to pick me up and bring me to the airport and I reserve a room in Kuala Lumpur. My flight leaves at 8am tomorrow morning. I have to be up at 5h30. It's going to be an early night. I've told Chris and Jenny that I would meet them at 9PM tonight for drinks. This was before booking anything. Just a quick drink.
Time now for supper. I had mentioned to Pranee that I would see her sometime today. Fate or destiny will decide if she'll be there. But I'm still leaving in the morning.
I guess I'll be spending another Valentine's Day alone.
Love to all!
