Yesterday I got up early for the drive to the Fortress at Louisbourg hoping to beat the tour buses and masses of tourist.

I get there around 9h30 and am on one of the first shuttles to the fort from the welcome center. As the other visitors stop at the recreation of the fishing village at the bus drop-off I make my way to the fort. There I'm stopped by a french guard.

"State your business and where are you from?" he says in french.

I tell him I'm from Calgary but originally from Winnipeg. He states he's never heard of those places. Then it dawns on me. I've passed through a time warp and am now in the 1740s. I tell him I'm actually from Dieppe and am here to see the Governor. He lets me pass.

I walk over to the Governor's office. He's busy. I wander around for a while and meet up with this female guard. This surprised me as I didn't think they let women into the guard units in the 18th century. I'm assuming she was in disguise. We chat for a while about her duties.

Finished with my tour of the Governor's residence I wander around the village. I come up to one of the warship Captain's residence. I'm invited in and chat with the lady of the house. Her husband is off to war and she hopes he'll be back by winter. This war with the English is frustrating as her husband is always off at sea. I say my aurevoirs and then chat with the servants. They are taking it easy at the moment. The Captain's 6 children are either at school or out playing. The younger of the servants starts flirting with this stranger in odd looking clothing and these funny looking contraptions on his shoulders.

The other servant mentions she's seen similar items with other strange visitors. I mention that they are inventions from the future called cameras and can instantly capture a drawing. I demonstrate what they can do. I say goodbye.

I continue to wander around town until lunch time. I stop in at one of the eating establishments. There I meet up with an older time traveling couple from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. We chat a while and then I give one of my business cards to them. The woman says she thinks she's heard of my business on the radio on some talk show. Is it possible that she's heard the radio interview about my book? Hmmm!

Lunch over, I'm finishing visiting the Fortress when I find the guards practicing their drill. They're marching along the waterfront and shoot off one of the canons in a cloud of smoke and loud bang.

My visit over, I catch the bus back to the visitor center and into the 21st century. I had quite an informative and interesting visit to the past.

I had plans to drive the Cabot Trail today but the weather did not cooperate. The winds blew and blew and that triggered a migraine headache. I spent most of the day in bed. Guess I'll have to do that drive some other time.
