Where I stayed
The mood at breakfast was lighter. We were leaving Oklahoma and the dreadful winds behind us. I discovered we hadn't been the only ones almost defeated by this stage of the tour. David and I sat with Dr Tom and Brett. Brett, 59, is from Silicon Valley and I was teasing him about being addicted to his iphone. (He was always checking ot see how much money he had raised for charity - 52,000 dollars so far, an incredible sum). I also told him the bag full of Scratch recovery drinks that he had so generously given David and I were keeping us alive.
For once we were ready in time to set off with the group. As if to wish us well on our way, Oklahoma provided a stunning day. It was beautiful, crisp and sunny with a slight tail wind
Brett had apparently been riding along side Jim when their wheels clipped and he went head first over the handle bars. He landed on the front of his head and was unconscious. Dr Tom was already in doctor mode when David arrived and an ambulance had been called. He and David exchanged essential information and it was obvious this was a serious accident. The paramedics arrived within 15- 20 minutes which given that we were in the middle of nowhere was rapid and they too immediately saw the need to get Brett not just to a local hospital but a regional centre. They called for the air ambulance.
We rode on nervously to our lunch stop and saw the helicopter arrive and take off for Joplin Hospital. Father Bruce led a prayer in the car park with the shocked group as congregation. Brett had surgery that evening. He had not regained consciousness.
