Day 21 Guymon Oklahoma to Woodward Oklahoma 127.0 miles 2900 ft climbing

If you were in the office today or snuggled in the library reading/writing an essay, let me assure you - you were in the best place.  I've rarely had a less enjoyable day on the bike.

Today was a defining day in 2 senses. Firstly, the trek guides reckoned today was the hardest day on the trip.  (It was certainly on a par with the longest day of 142 miles to Taos a few days ago).  Secondly, I learnt what EFI stands for.  I'd heard the guides mention it a couple of times but let it pass. It's their informal term for the people who are left on this trip - type "A", high achieving personalities who would rather have their eyes gouged out than go in the support van as they want to cover "ever f**king inch" of road on the ride across America.

It's incredible how the weather can turn so dramatically from fair to foul.  We woke to chilly temperatures and 40 mile cross winds.  If you've never ridden a bike that won't mean very much but any cyclist hates wind.  Head winds are probably the worst but violent cross winds are dangerous.  These high speed gusty winds, combined with speeding trucks on diabolical roads made the journey from Guymon to Woodward treacherous.  I'm still throbbing from the wind as I get ready for bed.  The day claimed more casualties who had to hitch a ride in the van.  Kelli, the only other woman gave up after 35 miles and her husband chivalrously accompanied her.  Tom M also gave up after 85 miles which was very disappointing for him but he rides solo whereas we ride in a group with Christian and Dr Tom.

David shielded me from the wind whenever possible - true love on a bicycle!  I can't believe I'm the only woman left who has covered "EFI" of the ride so far.  The trouble is we have to do the same tomorrow and I'm just not sure I can.

I think you can do it, sweetie! But, be sensible, get in that van if your good senses as a woman tell you its the right thing!!!!
