Day 15 Durango Colorado to Pagosa Springs Colorado 60.9 miles 3,423 ft of climbing

Had a great evening with one of my oldest friends Helen from Boulder, Colorado who made the 6 hour trip to Durango for dinner.  We remembered the summer we spent together at the vacation ranch, Longs Peak Inn in Estes Park where Helen was a competent waitress and I was not.  It was good to get out of the cycling bubble for a few hours.

A late night and lack of focus, however, meant that we left late the next day and took a wrong turn involving a 5 mile climb uphill and an extra 20 miles on to the day's total.  David was still in pain from his saddle sores and with tomorrow being the longest day would he be able to make it?  I asked one of the guides, Marquette, and she said that even at your fittest it is a very tough day.  She intimated that David might not make it but that I stood a good chance if we got an early start. So, a dilemma.  Do I risk going with David and maybe have to go in the van if he can't continue or do I press on with a group to give myself the best chance of completing the route before sunset?
