The drive from Chicago to New Orleans is just over 1000 miles (1600 km), so it was necessary to break up the trip. It works out perfectly that my Aunt Leah and her family live near St. Louis, 4.5 hours into the drive. It's been around 11 years since I last visited. I'm a very bad nephew.

My aunt and uncle graciously offered their guest room for the night. With only one day's notice before I was finally on my way, she organized a last minute dinner party and I got to visit with most of my mother's sister's family. I'm hoping that I'll be able to stop by again when I pass through heading north, and possibly I'll stay for a couple days next time.
