"Tag your it", thats what the typical laid back owner of our new Westfalia told me when he handed over the keys, "this Van will change your life man". It took Christina and I nearly 2 months to find our 1982 Diesel Westfalia, which was tipped of to me on craigslist after I left a note saying WANTED: 1982 WESTFALIA DIESEL ONLY. The reason for Diesel is the Vegi conversion that we have planned to install in a couple weeks. There just happens to be a fellow in Cobble Hill, BC that is a certfied mechanic for professionaly installing this system. So we will be running the whole distance on used Vegi Oil. Yes you heard correctly.... we're going to smell like fries and fried chicken!

Christina decided to name our Vanagon Wesley one day after a long talk over the phone, while she was in Australia for work... Seemed very fitting. Wesley is much different from our old car, which was quite difficult to let go of, our beautiful BMW Z3.

Some history of our little Vanagon, it was the home of a college student at UBC, trip down to Utah, and many camper experiences around British Columbia. Now we are getting prepared for the ultimate adventure, 40000 miles to South America. I have quit my job at Birks and Christina is home from the ships, we will be ready to leave for our first destination... California. So we are currently in the process of turning our Wesley into a home and planning the trip (or not planning depending on how you look at it!)
There's lots to be done and good-byes to be said but our hearts are already on the road again.

Enjoy Your Trip
Just saw your post and wanted to take a moment to wish you well. From Aug 3, 2005, to Mar 26, 2006, our home was an 84 VW diesel van ('Yoda') as we banged around Holland, Belgium, France and Spain. It was a fantastic experience and I can only hope you have half the fun we did.

One suggestion: join SERVAS (servas.org). It's a great way to (1) meet the locals and (2) get a free place to stay. We made some incredible friends and had most of our best adventures because of people we met through SERVAS.

Okay, two suggestions: take more pictures than you think reasonable. My wife was constantly shooting, sometimes 300 frames A DAY! But it's electronic. We just transferred it all to the hard drive. Shoot signs. Shoot out the widow as you drive. Shoot everyone you meet. Shoot. Shoot. Shoot. The idea is not to take a 'photograph' but to make a record of your trip.

Okay, now I thought of a third suggestion. Be sure to take a USB drive and set up your laptop to back up to the USB drive whenever it is connected. (MirrorFolder software handles this well.) That way, when they steal your laptop, they won't get all of those pictures.

Make sure that you have encrypted your data on the laptop or say hello to identity theft.

And check your insurance. We got our laptops stolen in Bilbao but thought, what the hell, we bought insurance. When we got home, I read the small print: 'Under no circumstances does this policy cover theft.' Well what the heck did I buy it for?

Have a good trip.

Re: Enjoy Your Trip
Thanks so much for all of the information and great advice. You are our first visitor to leave a comment and it was very exciting!

I've glanced at the SERVAS site and I'm going to do a little more research to see if we can interview in the US since we leave Canada in a few days... YAHOO!!

I just went to your website. You're Gracie is adorable!!! I love Labs! And she's from such a wonderful place, Cali (I'm from California)! Your trip sounds like it was absolutly amazing. Europe would be great, albeit way more expensive then South America. I also found the link for free book downloads. What a great idea. I'm going to start downloading right now!

Thanks again for all the advice. Make sure you keep watching our post.... we are going to update it as often as possible.

Have a wonderful and bright day!
Cheers,
Christina
