Today I woke to find Brittany gone, assumed she went running and guessed correctly. We had tostada con cafe for breakfast. I keep calling tostada tostones, which isn't toast at all. We grabbed our packed lunch of tortilla espanola sandwiches, bread snacks, fruits, and a juice box and headed out to the streets of Madrid. We got onto the metro sin problemas and were able to get to our stop, Retiro, though it spit us out into el parque de retiro, which was beautiful but we wanted to be on the other side of the street, not behind the park gates. We managed to find the tunnel under the street and found what we though to be the school. An hour early, we kept walking around, exploring the city.
After 30 minutes of mindlessly turning street corners, we ran into Eva and Ytzel, the first Americans we had seen since the day before!! So happy I could have hugged them! Eva needed to buy a converter and so did Brittany so we joined forces and searched for an electronics shop that they had gotten directions to. We managed to find the shop and grabbed a number. While waiting for our number, which no one was calling numbers either way, the available cashier would just shout, "siguente!" and we'd run up to the counter, but any who, while we were waiting we were talking about our host mamas and Eva's trip solo from London to Madrid. After the other three got their converters, turns out Ytzel needed one as well, we headed back through the door yet again.
We began searching for the big road that our school was on and started walking. We must have passed a dozen different signs for "cafeterias" and "cervecarias" but no Estudio Sampere. After 20 minutes, I pulled out my map to see if I could find the school on it and then get back that way. Feeling like a complete loser, I opened my map for the first time to find that the map was from the school itself and that the school was marked with a big red arrow - my b. Either way, we found the crossroads and arrived at the school ten minutes late, despite arriving almost an hour early.
We met up with our professor, the other students and our tour guide and set off for our tour of the city. We hit up all the touristy places within walking distance of La Puerta del Sol and took lots of photos. The tour guide only spoke Spanish, which was alright because the majority of us understand it almost fluently. We learned that Victoria was known as 'nee-kuh' and she was a woman with angel wings. Somehow.. and I didn't quite follow exactly how this happened but 'nee-kuh' becomes 'nay-kee' which is spelled "Nike" like the shoe brand and the Nike swoosh is actually one of her angel wings? There are other stories also like the one two lions that are famous for being separated.
