OOPS... this journey way made in 2006 and NOT 2005!!..... We stayed in Kobylisy, at the Hotel Appolo (2*) .  We paid 19 per night for a double room, which was immaculate.  We ate in a small pizzeria on the corner of Kubisova and Zenklova - food was very reasonable - the beer was lush!  We sat there playing scrabble most of the night (of course I won!!).  The owner was quite friendly; we told him that we were heading north to find somewhere to snowboard; and he recommended Harrachov, a place he spent all his childhood holidays with his family.
The next day we did a days travelling around Prague.  Off on the Metro 5 stops from Kobylisy to the Muzeum .  We came up from the Metro and arrived in Wensclas Square.  Whilst I liked some of the buildings and the smell of mulled wine, I wasn't impressed with the range of touristy shops.  We walked straight down to the end of the Square and cut through the back streets heading towards Charles Bridge.  I was quite shocked at seeing 70 yr oldish men kneeling down begging along the bridge - they must have been freezing - it was around minus 12 degrees.  The view up and down the river and on the embankments was spectacular - especially looking up towards the Hradcany.
The walk up and around the Hradcany was a gently up hill stroll, with many interesting little shops and restaurants aong the way .  On arrival the changing of the guard was good entertainment, and the view back down towards the Bridge was breathtaking.  St Vitus Cathederal was worth the visit.
Walking back down the stairs into Prague there were plenty of little nik-naks to buy along the way if its your bag - it wasn't ours.  After an hour or so walking through the back streets, we found yet another lovely little cafe/bar where we had soup, a peppered goulash and two pints of beer each all for less than 10!!
