Arrived in New Plymouth on Monday afternoon after a very scenic seaside drive from Whakapapa. Has to stop a few Ks short of New Plymouth as my tummy was feeling a bit dodgy! But after the rest I was ok. Turned up at a 'top 10' holiday park and stayed in a cabin for 3 days.
Nice place except for the bugs which I must say put up a gallant fight before I ejected them from my abode & bed one way or another....
On arrival I drove to the town centre which is not very modern, rather 70s/80s feel but the few beers in a bar made me feel at home. I walked the rather lovely coastal walk watching all the kids & Chinese mussel collecting among the amazing lava rocks filling the beach. Very good walk that one!
On Easter Monday I was meant to go up Mount Taranaki (Egmont) however, my sat nav took me all around to the south side after an hour and couldnt find the carpark/visitor centre I needed, so I gave that up & went to Dawson Falls on the South side of the mountain, which was great but not much rain so couldda been better!
On Tueday (today), I at last went up Taranaki and OMFG!!! with the air so thin & hot & the first 1.5 hours a continual steep climb to the first lodge I was in trouble man!! I had to stop every couple of metres to catch my breath & rest my weary legs! My god that was a much tougher climb for me than even tongariro which at least had leg resting plateauxs! That being said, the descent was easier but still hazardous in places. After 5 hours I ended up with a very nice ham, cheese & onion omlette in the visitor centre cafe ($10!!!)
I was soo bloody dead from the toes up I slept for 2 hours then showered & did my laundry - my clothes were soaking with sweat!! Man that was a tough day!
Tomorrow it onwards to Wanganu

Hi Clive, hope you are enjoying your travels. Looking forward to following your continued adventures. How is the tent working out for you? I guess you have spent some nights in it now. Make sure you keep warm, and wear a vest. Cheers Peter
