No visit to New York is complete without seeing the Statue of Liberty.  However, the statue is currently closed for maintenance so we headed south this morning on the subway to South Ferry to catch the Staten Island ferry.  This free 25 minute ferry ride passes the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island on its way to St George, Staten Island.

We disembarked for a short walk along the embankment, then headed to the Borough Hall to see the famed murals.  Unfortunately the Borough Hall is not open on weekends, so we caught the next ferry back to Manhattan.  We walked through Battery Park and up to the 9/11 Memorial site, but were unable to visit as entrance is by reserved pass - only available via the website.

We decided to walk to Brooklyn Bridge, viewing Wall Street, the FW Woolworth building, and City Hall on the way.  We walked to the mid-point of the bridge then returned to catch the subway again to 23rd Street to see the Flatiron building.  It definitely wasn't our day - the subway was operating an express service and didn't stop at 23rd Street!  Instead we alighted at 34th Street to visit the Empire State building.  It was very windy on the 86th floor observation deck, but what great views, and we did see the Flatiron building..

Back at ground level we continued walking along Broadway until we once again reached the hotel.  It has been sunny and warm today and the temperature reached 17C, not a normal January day!
