After a pleasant two hour train journey from Sapporo we arrived in Furano. There we checked into a nice Youth Hostel and went for a walk to enjoy the countryside. Where it's all about skiing in winter, during spring and summer the big draw card is expansive fields with perfectly aligned rows of lavender and various flowers. And even though we're not too much into flowers, this was really quite beautiful. Impressive was also the amount of tourists here. We haven't seen many Westerners but Japanese tourist are around in masses; quite a spectacle by itself. We actually had to start booking our train journeys and accommodations in advance as we'd encountered too many places fully sold out (and the actual summer holidays haven't even started yet!).

Unfortunately our second day in Furano was a rainy one. Everybody assured us that this is really uncommon, but well, it didn't stop all day. We still tried to venture out but in the end had to retreat to dry indoors.
