Marisel and I caught a ride up to Maragogi, a tiny beach town two hours north of Maceio, with the same travel agency we used to visit Praia Gunga the day before. It was the same price, without all the hassle and discomfort of the bus. We found ourselves a wonderful little pousada outside of the town, right on the beach. Our room was a little more expensive than a night in a hostel, but we had a great balcony with ocean view and a nice little pool. We caught one of two tourist boats out to the natural pools, about a thirty minute ride off the shore, and had fun snorkeling and taking some ridiculous water pictures (Marisel roped me into buying a CD of pictures of us swimming). They are fun, but it is quite silly that I spent most of my time in the pools being dragged around by some guy with an underwater camera instructing me to dive down and hold onto a piece of coral etc. Kept cutting my foot, which was quite annoying. The rest of the time we spent on the boat chatting with other tourists, mainly Brazilians. It was quite amusing how most people assumed we were Argentines, as Marisel and I have of course been speaking Spanish with each other. Argentines aren't very popular in South America, so I have found out...
We headed back to our pousada in the late afternoon and had the most relaxing and wonderful evening there. Most tourists visit only for the day, which meant we had the whole town practically to ourselves. We played in the calm, warm ocean and relaxed in the hammocks, closing our eyes and listening to the waves crash. Marisel had an early night (7:30pm!) while I tried to catch up a bit in my journal...still three weeks behind! Couldnīt sleep again that night and ended up getting out of bed around 5:15, shortly after the sunrise. Ran out to the pristine, empty beach and took some of the most beautiful pictures of the sun and the water. Rested in the hammocks and took it all in for a couple hours as Marisel and the rest of the town slept. Before heading to breakfast, ran into the water, which was so refreshing, cool, calm, and completely deserted...
We caught a private transfer to Olinda around 9:30am. It was Sunday so we had to spend a bit more as the collectivo wasn't running. I was sad to leave Maragogi. Perhaps because it was so quiet, I felt more comfortable, safer, more relaxed than I had been in Maceio. If I had more time up north I would have definitely stayed at least another night!
