A huge thunderstorm followed us into Havre de Grace. Knowing our usual luck, we were expecting to have the torrential downpour happen as soon as we started hooking up to electric and getting the windshield cover on. But the gods were forgiving and the downpour didn't happen until seconds after we sat at our dining table with everything all set for our overnight stay. A fireman had met up with us out in the parking lot after we drove up and made sure we knew where to park. He said he didn't think the storm would be too bad tonight, but we were more than welcome to stay in the firehouse if it did. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Firemen & firewomen are some of the nicest folks around. I'm very proud to be the granddaughter of a fireman.

Rhonda, our sponsor contact, came by in the morning...she had been part of a call just an hour or so before, so she said she had arranged for another person, Lauren, to drive us to the first stop while she cleaned up. Lauren was thrilled to be recruited since she's been working on advance ticket sales, so we had a great time getting to know her during our short time with her.

She took us to a daycare for our first stop and it turned out to be one of the best programs John's done yet. The kids were attentive, excited, and loose with their laughter through the whole thing...the teachers were laughing along with them and all in all, it was a great half hour for everyone. Lauren even shared one of her favorite jokes with John and we loved it so much, he's decided to include it in his program from now on! ("What do you call an alligator in a vest?" "An investigator!")

After the daycare, we went back to the fire station to meet up with Rhonda and get more flyers. We piled into her truck and stopped by a few stores, dropped off posters and hit up a strip mall where we handed out flyers. A quick stop at a McDonald's for lunch turned into quite the balloon animal affair as we were immediately overwhelmed by all sorts of kids coming in with their parents. Again, I really need to learn how to make a balloon dog. I can't believe John even had fingertips at the end of today because he made dozens of balloon animals by the end of it.

The second daycare we went to also had a great group of kids...a couple of the really young ones were enamored with John. It was pretty adorable; they would keep walking up to him, softly touch his shoes or try to hold his hand during his program. When the group wanted a photo with him, those two made sure to be as close to him as possible. :)

The last thing we did was stop by a library that wasn't expecting us. They were more than happy to have a clown entertain in the children's area, so we set up shop over there and immediately attracted the attention of a few kids hanging out by the computers. John started making balloon animals and - long story short - didn't stop making balloon animals until over an hour later. We were bombarded by kids. He actually had a fairly lengthy line of kids waiting with their parents for balloon animals! We handed out a lot of flyers and I even got over my balloon fear long enough to blow up balloons for him to make the process a little faster. We stopped when we finally ran out of balloons. I really wish we'd had a count of how many we took with us today.

All in all, VERY successful day. Rhonda was very happy and we were very happy. Couldn't ask for anything more. We have a three day weekend ahead of us and though we'll be doing a little bit of relaxing, we're going to use it to catch up on cleaning, organizing, and making John's program even better than it is. I've made a vow that we'll FINALLY finish the puppets we owe John's contributors from his fundraiser last fall (If any of you are reading this right now, we are SO sorry it's taken longer to get your prizes than anticipated. They are coming, we promise!!).
