Where I stayed
Football stadium parking lot
We got into Petersburg last night and killed some time at the Dollar General (we had NO idea how many dollar stores are out there in the world until we went on the road....they exist in multiples in every single small town we've hit) while we waited to hear back from the sponsor, Mike. We found out later that he's having some family emergency stuff going on, so when we met up with him, we told him that if need be, we could entertain ourselves and the town without him. He did say that he had arranged for someone else to drive us around, just in case, so that made us feel better.
We talked with him for quite awhile outside of the football field and he told us all about what the Athletic Boosters (the circus sponsors) were doing for the town. They are so supportive of the students and are bending over backwards to give them as may opportunities and new uniforms as they can
Mike met up with us in the morning with our driver, Kimmie. She was really sweet and we knew instantly we'd get along. Her young daughter wanted to come along with her today because she thought it was pretty cool that her mom would be driving a clown around. I guess Kimmie took her daughter to the circus last year for the first time and she LOVED it...the clowns were her favorite, so she can't wait for it this year again.
We visited a couple of daycares, one of which the daycare director told us had a lot of kids who are being taken care of by their grandparents. She said the kids have been looking forward to a circus clown visiting for awhile now and this will be all they talk about for weeks. It was pretty humbling to hear and we made sure they got a lot of photos with J.P. before leaving. On our way out, another teacher there asked us if we could hang around for a few minutes because a girl was on her way here with her mother and she desperately wanted to meet the circus clown. We waited and when she finally arrived, she was pretty bashful but very forthcoming with everything she loves about circuses and how excited she is for Kelly Miller to come back to her town
Kimmie finished our day at her place of work (where Mike also works), a home for developmentally and/or mentally challenged adults to learn basic living skills. John put on a short program for everyone and we passed out flyers to each person. The best part was when John did the hat gag where he drops his hat, tries to pick it up, but kicks it ahead of him. That got the entire crowd laughing really hard. :)
Kimmie drove us back to our RV in a hurry after that because we needed to be on the road in order to make it to a newspaper interview in Shinnston, WV for the Mannington, WV circus date.
