I've been living in Fremantle, a city 30 minutes outside of Perth, for the last month. I've got myself some jobs, some friends, some money, and a routine. It's kind of like living at home, but it's warmer, and I'm washing dishes for work. Fremantle (Freo) is very cool, and I'm living in a hostel which feels pretty much like home. Ashley and I are a constant fixture in our 6-person dorm now. We barely spend any time in our room, though, since we're often working, making food, eating it, or hanging out in our other friends' room, because they have a TV. Tuesday night is "The OC" night, and we have just discovered the wonders of Thursday night TV as well.

We very rarely go out and party, though we have been known to drink boxed wine and/or bourbon in the dining area or our rooms. Last night was Ashley's first night out. We went to Perth because my friend Tidha, who I stayed with in Melbourne, was in town on business. We went to the Belgian Beer Gardens where we feasted on Hoegarten and Stella. The only other place I've been is Little Creatures, which is the local brewery here, where we went this afternoon as well.

Ashley and I have both celebrated our birthday here. Ash's was about 3 weeks ago, and was the beginning of our friendship with Nik and Greg (the guys with the TV) since Ashley wanted to watch "The OC" for her birthday. We then proceeded to get drunk on boxed wine. A similar night for my birthday on Monday, the difference being we had bourbon this time. And I had to work the next day. But at least it was just dish-washing, which doesn't require much thought.

We have quit the dishwashing job, having shared the 5 shifts a week for the past 2 weeks. We need to be available for our other job, at the Carriage Cafe in the park. Next weekend is the Blues and Roots Festival, and apparently we will be working a lot, and therefore making lots of money. Hopefully we can hear some of the music too.

We haven't done much in the way of touristy things, due to lack of money at first, and now lack of time. Ashley is leaving in 3 weeks, and we have plans to go to Rottnest Island, camping at the Pinnacles, and do a tour of the prison. We've also established a list of places we "have to" eat at, since Freo is basically one restaurant/cafe after another. It's really quite lovely.

I went fishing the other day with Nik, and between us we caught 3. And they were all mine. Unfortunately they were all tiny, and 2 of them were poisonous. But it was a lot more fun than I thought, and we now know which bait to get in order to catch edible fish. The view off the pier is lovely, crystal clear Indian Ocean.

Other things to do in and around Freo is to go to the beach. Cottlesoe Beach had an outdoor art festival a few weeks ago, and the beach is stunning anyway. On Sundays at the Art Centre there's free concerts. I had the day off today, and went to see a 4-piece cello with drum band called Wood. They were awesome, and the atmosphere is always great there.
