Cairns is the the place where Daniele is leaving me. She hasn't left me yet, though. Still 3 more days. Tomorrow we are going on a boat trip of the Great Barrier Reef. She is a licenced scuba diver, so she's going diving, and she has convinced me to go as well, for one introductory dive. As I wrote that, I wrote die, instead of dive, because I am terrified. I had the opportunity to do a dive in the Whitsundays but I didn't take it. But it's deeper here, and it's the Great Barrier Reef, so I'm sure I'll feel dumb one day soon if I didn't take the chance when I could.

On Monday, Daniele, Ashley and I are going on a tour of one of the rainforests up here. (Ashley isn't coming tomorrow because she's taking a dive course next week... she is also abandoning me.) Tuesday, Daniele leaves for Vietman, and Ashley starts her course, and I will start in earnest to look for a job and a place to live that's not $18/night. This is cheap for a hostel, but not a good price for rent. Our hostel is on the Esplanade, overlooking the lagoon (since the beach is crap) and we get a free dinner every night. I just signed up for the Cairns employment service, so hopefully something will show up soon so I can travel to New Zealand, and more extensively through Australia.

We haven't done much in Cairns because the weather has been wonky due to a cyclone somewhere further up the coast. It pours all day intermittently. The other day we went rafting on the Tully River. It was lots of fun, even though the water level was pretty low.

Attached are some pictures from the last few weeks. Also, you can check out pictures taken by our Irish friends on Fraser Island on this website: http://community.webshots.com/album/547673469erAuom
