Where I stayed
Waitakere Ranges Regional Park
This is actually not far from Auckland, in fact it is part of the Auckland Regional Park System. We drove through the hills to the Atakari Visitor's Centre, admiring the beautiful views over Manakau Harbour.
We decided to stay at Cornwallis Beach picnic area, which had toilets and barbeques, but no other facilities. It seems the days of "freedom camping" are over, but self-contained campervans are allowed to stay for $5.00 per person with prior booking as long as they have a certificate of self-containment.
Tim had an invigorating walk in the afternoon out to Whatipu Lookout (Lemming bench) along the Hillary Trail. Claire was too tired so missed out on a great photo op, choosing instead to have a little kip with the bed partly pulled out.
We had all of Cornwallis Beach to ourselves after all the JAFAs (you'll have to look this up if you don't know, it's too rude to put down here) left.
It was a beautiful night with lots of stars and the lights of Auckland in the distance.
The ranger came around to check our camping receipt and our self-contained certificate before closing the gates for the night.
