Friday 31st August - Monday 3rd September

We had decided to next visit the fabled island of Chiloe, and after hearing about a picturesque fishing village called Chonchi (with dolphins swimming in the sea), we decided to venture there.  We caught a bus from Pucon to the portal town of Puerto Montt (4 hour journey).  There we manged to catch another bus to Chiloe, crossing the sea on a ferry.

Chiloe is a fairly large island off the west of Chile, and most of the economy is through salmon farming.  Nearly all the buildings are made out of wood, due to a shortage of metal years ago, including even wooden nails.   On arrival on Chiloe, we saw the landscapes were green and lush with rolling hills and sheep grazing on the land.

It took 4 hours to reach the sleepy village of Chonchi and we arrived in the dark to try and find the reported hostel...halfway down the beach!  Hostel owner appear surprised to see travelers out of season but offered us a room and directed us to a local restaurant that was open and recommend grilled ´congrio´fish for supper.

The following day after having breakfast watching dolphins in the sea, we set off with another map kindly given to us by the hostel owner (a hand drawn scrawl!).  We walked alongside the coast to a ferry port where we caught a ferry to the island of Lemuy and walked to a village and cove.  It was lovely scenery and very quiet and peaceful.  We spotted black necked swans and pelicans, and various other birds.  Lovely chilled day.

We ate again in the village restaurant that night, but unfortunately this time not sure the fish was so good!!  Both awoke in the middle of the night rather unwell and decided best not to take the 4 hour bus back to mainland the following day.  Hostel basically half closed for renovation and couldn´t even boil any water!  Not the ideal place to be ill but spent a day recovering watching telly (thankfully the Canadian owner had sky!)...hilarious to watch bob the builder in Spanish ("Bob el constructor").  There was a terrific storm that day and we could watch the waves from our room.

Feeling much better the next day, we caught the bus back out of Chonchi to Puerto Montt but stayed the night  20k up the cost in the prettier lakeside town of Puerto Varas before catching the morning bus to San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina the next day...........

Hope you are all well, and enjoyed the bank holiday weekend.   Thinking of you lots and wish you were here...or some of you at least!  :o)  Thanks for your emails...please keep ´em coming, it´s really great to hear all your news!

Lots of love Claire and Ross xxxx

Envious Greetings from Bloxham
Hi there!

Great series of bulletins to cheer me up at the start of term!

I'm going to look for flights to Chile at Christmas (just as soon as I have washed the car..).

Keep enjoying yourselves (and avoid the fish).

Love,
Andrew
