Last night the power went out and we didn't have it up again until this afternoon around 4:30pm.  Very happy about this, as it gets dark around 5:30pm.  The reason for the power outage?  Well, the hurricane in the Caribbean caused an incredible amount of rain to fall and the roads were affected by land slides and or flooding.  The roads out of Colon were closed this morning... and the town was without power until later this afternoon... later this afternoon some of the roads were reopened.  We walked into town with Patrick, our neighbor who is staying in another house on the property.  We had lunch at a soda, which is a fast food Costa Rican restaurant.  I think we'll pass on these in the future.

It pretty much rained all day... but we found a fun place for kids where the locals hang out, ride bikes and skateboard at the town center... there aren't any playgrounds in Ciudad Colon but there is this place (where the farmers market is on the weekend) that is next to the church and soccer field... as always in Costa Rican little towns.

Dave wasn't able to work much today, but we made the best of it.  We still had running water and we keep the doors open during the day anyway so wasn't that bad for us.  the food stayed cold in the little fridge we have.  we have a gas stove so that wasn't a problem either... I really love this little gas stove!

We heard that in the largest city of Escazu today, there was a large landslide that killed over 20 people... really sad to hear.  We can see several landslides around the valley outside the back of the apartment we are staying in... there are many more that we can't see.  The house where we are staying, is very safe so we aren't too worried - unless it rained for another 2 weeks!

The girls and I were just in Escazu yesterday for a day at the mall - that was frighteningly similar to being at home... and we aren't a mall family.
The kids had a great time though, playing on the kids play equipment and also there was a kids train that takes you around the mall.  We also had lunch and gelato!

Let me back track... to Jaco, our beach excursion.  We left Sun and came back on Monday.

We drove the families subaru, the same as our car at home just a little bit older.  They took the trooper.  The drive to the coast was beautiful.  It was mountainous as back home in WA but with a feel of the tropics because the foliage is so different.  It was a fun trip.  We stopped on the way to see huge crocodiles off the side of a bridge.  There were several of them and very large!  There were a few tables with touristy odds and ends that they were trying to sell, so must be a popular place to stop.  Apparently people throw chickens to the crocs, not sure if that means alive or dead?  Either is possible here.

We got to Jaco (Hah-co) after about an hour and a half drive (Iheading straight to the Auto Mercado once we arrived, a gringo grocery store..  I admit I spent too much there but got some real goodies!)  and immediately hit the beach upon our arrival to the hotel.  The place we stayed was right on the beach, just crossed a one way street to get to the sandy beach.  The sand is fine and black and the water is fairly warm. I felt giddy like a kid again.  It reminded me of FL as a child, running in the waves and trying to catch a few waves on a boogie board :)  Dave caught a few and I got one too.  We played for a few hours and the girls just loved it.  They played in the sand and in the waves and in the water and just loved everything about it.  There were surfers out in the higher waves farther out as Jaco is a tourist and surfer haven.  The beach we were at was not very populated which made it all the better.  The family we know have a connection with the owner of our hotel, so we got a great deal.  The weather was nice the first day and then pretty much poured the rest of the time we were there, but we still got out in the rain and the beach one more time the next day.  We played in the pool a lot too.  We may go back here to visit again.  It was supposed to keep on raining so we headed back to the farm in Colon.  The girls and I slept in the back seat on the way home.

The Saturday before we left for the beach, Sharon had a get together of her friends from around here and her tenants were invited too.  We met a nice family that lives in Puriscal, the next town over - even more rural town than here.  They have 2 daughters and Sydney and the younger daughter really hit it off.  They played for hours and got to be good buddies.  The mom and dad are really nice too and we are planning on a play date at their house in the coming days.  Her mom is Alison from Denver and her dad is Miguel from Columbia.  Very nice and lovely family.  We hit it off right away.  Now with the weather affecting travel we'll have to see if we can still get there this week.  We want to go horseback riding with some of Alison's friends that own horses and take people on rides, perhaps we can still swing it this weekend.  People are so nice here and we have made a ton of connections... which is helpful because it helps a lot to know a friend of a friend here in CR.

We had a great surprise one morning recently, when Dick brought down a box of 2 week old baby chicks!  The girls and I were excited to hold them, although they weren't too happy to be held.  They went back into the box soon after we met and held them and then they were put into their short term incubated house.  The family here gets new chicks often and raises them for eggs and meat.

We are settled in here for another week and then Dave's parents come into town this coming Tues.

We are hoping for some drier days to come!
