I spent a couple of nights at the Blue Mountains, based at Katoomba. I had been hoping to climb while I was here, but I wasn't able to get here in time to meet up with the climbing partner I arranged on the web, so I had to content myself with some bush-walking.

However, I have set up some climbing for next week at a couple of places round Melbourne. Hopefully I'll get to check out Mount Arapiles, which is supposed to be the best trad climbing in Australia. We shall see.

The Blue Mountains don't really feel like mountains, more like cliffs. The entire plateau above the cliffs is populated with a series of towns and villages, but the low lying land below the cliffs is empty bush full of gum trees. There are some awesome scenic lookouts, some pretty much in town but you'd never think it from the pictures, especially the obligatory shot of the "Three Sisters", a rock formation near Katoomba. It used to be possible to climb these but they've stopped that now because of worries about the stability of the rock.

There are plenty of white cockatoos flying about but they're pretty tough to take pictures of. Apparantly there are plenty of snakes in the bush too but I didn't see any - shame! I did get a pretty nice sunset though.

Tomorrow I am flying from Sydney to Melbourne.
