It is about as beautiful as one would expect from a place called paradise. I am currently staying on the northwest coast of the Island called Moorea, about thirty minutes, by fast ferry, west of papeete. My residence for the past couple of days has been the simple but adequate camping chez nelson. The cost is low relative to the alternative establishments in the area of wich there are about twenty. Suprisingly enough there are not that many people here. The other day I swam out to one of the outlaying islands across the channel to find some of the most impressive snorkelling I've ever experienced. The fish here resemble 80's trek suits more than they do creatures that have evolved in a natural environment. I have no idea why neon yellow, royal blue, alizeron crimson, vandyke brown, titanium white, naples yellow, and raw umber-just to name a few- would be the most benefitial color scheme over the course of millions of years of evolution, but it certainly looks interesting. I borrowed a mask and a snorkel from a local spear fisherman who was working the reef, and met up with two new zealand women and a rough looking ex chicago cop named vic who happened to be staying at the same grounds as I. I'm going to hire a scooter to buzz around the island, and hopefully a few noteworthy views will present themselves to my camera and sketchpad.
