G'day Mates,

When I took off from BKK the sun was setting, as I landed in Sydney(SYD) the sun was rising. What a change of pace, I no longer have to worry about crazy BKK drivers who will stop for nothing. Its nice to be back where pedestrians aren't human pylons! Thankfully SYD and BKK both drive on the wrong side of the road so that is one adjustment I do not have to make.

I hit the ground running this AM. I thought it best to fight through the jet lag and the 5 minutes of sleep I had in my MIDDLE SEAT on the 8.5 hour flight coming here. It was a beautiful day here in SYD. Cloudless Carolina blue skies Probably mid 60's at best and a little breeze. Quite a change from the past 6 weeks, but refreshing. Today was spent walking all over SYD. The Opera House is something to see. It looks as the architect intended, a sailboat. It is very impressive sitting on the point surrounded by water. I must have taken 30 pictures of the Opera House alone. I walked through the Botanical Gardens. There were plants and trees there that looked prehistoric. I was surprised by all the different birds. I never expected to see so many plant and animal exotics. There were parrots and I saw what looked like a giant Cockatiel, that made lots of noise. I walked through The Rocks area and towards Darling Harbor. Then I took the bus to Newtown in search of an Australia Guidebook. Newtown reminds me of the Plaza-Midwood shopping district but miles long.

My first shocker here were the prices. After 3 weeks of $18 a night rooms and $2-5 dollar meals, reality check. SYD is expensive by comparison! The place is loaded with Thai restaurants though!!! About 4 X's what I was paying in Thailand. Rooms are almost double and that's for a hostel. I had found a place to stay in a private home but passed because I totally misunderstood the pricing system for hostels here. The price the rooms was priced per person. If you are one person you pay the rate for two people, which stinks. I'm staying in the Kings Cross area which is not exactly the best area in SYD. Tomorrow I switch over to another hostel a little newer, bigger, and cleaner.

Lets see Ive been awake now about 33 hours so I think I am going to go crash. I have an ambitious itinerary mapped out for tomorrow, so it will be a long day.

G'night,

Chuck
