Flag of Thailand  , Krabi,
Thursday, January 12, 2012

We flew out the 11th for Krabi.  We had to change planes in Bangkok, we had several hours to explore the airport.  BKK airport opened in '07 I think and is huge.  They even have a nice park adjacent to the terminal.  We played the waiting game again and ended up in 1st class!  Gotta love it.

From the Krabi airport we took the city bus.  It was full of westerners and their luggage, Luggage was stacked like a fortress around the bus driver.  We sat in the 1st row(not 1st class) I kept waiting for the pile to shift!  We ended up buying tickets to the wrong bus stop and had to purchase another ticket to the place where we caught our boat to Railay beach.  In Thailand the boats used for water taxis are long tail boats.  There is no pier you have to wade in the water to board the boat.  We had to make a pit stop in the toilet to change out of our Non Rev attire(we fly stand by on airline industry tickets and Thai has a strict dress code.  ie: no shorts).  It was low tide so we had to walk through the muck to get there.  The boat ride was about 15 minutes.  We hit the beach is search of a room.  It is peak season right now and prices are a premium and we are budget travelers, many rooms were over budget and others hotels were full.  We walked over to East Railay where the backpackers and budget travelers stay.  There is no beach to speak of on E. Railay, just Mangrove trees so that is why rooms are cheaper.  We found one for $50 a night that was fine, but still over budget.  We moved the next night and found a basic room with air for $30.

Railay is very pretty, the beach is surrounded by huge limestone cliffs.  We rented a sea kayak and paddled around for a few hours.  While kayaking I stopped to get the camera out to take some photos of a huge lizard.  After a minute of looking panic set in as I could not find the NEW camera we just bought.  I gave the pack to John and told him to look.  No camera.  I was so confused since I had just put the camera in the small carrying case.  We paddled to the closest beach for water and take a break.  When we got out the camera was in my seat: WET and ruined. It must have fallen out when I opened the pack.  : (   Thankfully the memory card is fine!

The rest of the day was pretty chill, we watched the sunset then ate a great dinner at the bungalows where we stayed.
