For the last few days of vacation we ended where we had expected to begin...at Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj in Slovenia. The fall colors were beautiful and the lakes are especially peaceful because motor boats are not allowed on either. We took the pletna boat to the small island in the middle of Lake Bled and toured the very old church there. The boats are unique to Lake Bled and, like the gondolas in Venice, are part of an old, well-guarded tradition.
From Lake Bled we took a day trip to the even more peaceful Lake Bohinj before driving across the Julian Alps back to Austria and home. The last days of vacation were very relaxing due to all of the time we spent in these natural places.
This brings our Fall Vacation, 2007, series to a close. As an overall impression we were pleasantly surprised by how comfortable the countries of the former Yugoslavia felt. Slovenia and Croatia, especially, are used to tourists and are very easy if you are willing to stay in people's homes and to be open to alternative arrangements. We felt safe at all times - even in the poorer countries of Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovina. English was seldom a problem as it is the common language in tourist areas. We saw beautiful countryside, moving ruins, and ate wonderful food. All in all, not a bad vacation!

* Bled: Camping Bled: Clean, warm showers. Very friendly staff. Free wireless. Crappy bikes that we rented very cheaply because they were so awful!
