Where I stayed
Bring on day 2, might be feeling the effects of altitude tomorrow, plus it will be colder than it is tonight, it's around 9 degrees which is pretty toasty.
First day of trek today, we were picked up from the hotel at 9.30am , but by the time we got to Machame trailhead and registered it was noon , we then started the trek to the roof of Africa ! The day involved 1200m ascent with a 12 mile hike through the rainforest to 3000m. The weather started off hot and humid but around 2 hours in the heavens opened with thunder, lighting and even hail, it proceeded to rain for 2 hours. My day sack got soaked but luckily my main bag had an excellent water proof liner which was a god send as it kept my gear bone dry. Some of the guys on the trek didn't have a liner and their stuff was absolutely soaked. Hopefully they can dry it tomorrow as we should be at camp for 2.30pm . We arrived at the Machame hut at 4pm and signed the register to show that we got here OK, I presume if someone doesn't sign in they send out a search party. It took the porters about an hour to set up camp so we tried to dry out the gear, luckily I brought some nylon rope which we used as a make shift washing line. Considering the soaking, everyone was in good sprits. We had dinner and did a bit of star gazing, the sky is amazing at altitude with no light pollution, saw a shooting star and Mars was right above us, I think Mars has already left the skies in the northern hemisphere. Took some pictures of the sky with long exposures, have to see how they'll come out when I get home.
