Where I stayed
Most I have run into here say that staying in Omoneia is the worst place you can stay. There are definitely more non-Greeks in the area and the people seem poorer. From Afghans to Algerians, they own the shops and live in the area. They leave you alone so nothing to worry about, but since times are tough, certain people here, if you allow them, will take advantage of you. Stay alert when walking around the area. I saw prostitutes and a guy preparing a white powder from tin foil which most certainly was drugs all near the hotel. The hotel staff, however, was very friendly and helpful. The rest of the day I spent around the acropolis, parliament square (Syntagma), and Monastraki the market and city center where the best gyros, kebab, and souvlaki are made daily.
