I just finished reading "First They Killed My Father." It's a book written by a Cambodian woman who was between 5 and 9 years old when the Khmer Rouge initiated their genocide against their own people in the late 70s. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in this sad chapter of Cambodian history.
After finishing the book I realized that 30 years ago the horrors of this war were going on. Not 1000, 500, or even 100 years ago, but only 30 years ago. Traveling is so enriching in so many different ways. In this case, it has brought to my attention the atrocities that this country has suffered, and the poverty it has caused as well, and how fortunate I am to have had a great family growing up and being so comfortable throughout my life.
So anyways... I'm in Thailand now, hurray... The Kingdom of Thailand, to be exact. Country #8, and the first one I've been in so far where people drive on the left side of the road.
So far, in Asia,I've gone from 1,000 Won in South Korea,to 8RMB in China,to 16,000 Dong in Vietnam, to 4,000 Riel in Cambodia, to what appears to be around 32 Baht in Thailand.
I'm not sure anymore exactly where I'll go next; whether it's Myanmar or Laos. I might just get some good malaria medicine and head to Laos, since I keep hearing it's really nice. Or I might just go to Myanmar. I haven't bought any tickets yet, so I'll figure it out in the next few days I suppose.
