I arrived tired but happy in Bangkok
yesterday.
The flight was ok, thank God it was a
direct flight but 11 hours still can be long on a plane, especially
if you can't sleep. I envy the people around me on a plane, who just
close their eyes and start falling asleep right away.- I simply
can't. Well in the end I caught like 3 hours of „“sort of sleep“,
still better than nothing.
At Munich airport I chatted with a few
Thai people. Once they found out that I speak Thai they were
amazingly friendly. It turned out that part of the group was going to
Phitsanulok where my girlfriend lives and where I will be going on
wednesday. They offered me a free ride to there. Sweetbut that would
have changed myplans too much since I booked my hotel in Bangkok
already and I wanted to meet a few friends in Bangkok before heading
up north.

Arriving at Suvarnabhumi, Bangkok
airport everything went smootly and quickly: baggage claim, passport
control and customs- within less than 1 hour after arrival I sat in a
metered-taxi tomy hotel in Thong Lor.
I had been to Bangkok countless times
but I had never been to that area before, but alwaysstayed around
Khao San road in Banglamphu. The hotel has a big advantage: it's very
close to Thong Lor BTS (skytrain) station so it's easy to get away
from there. I ended up paying slightly more than I should for the
taxi but never mind.
No Problems with the online
reservation, the room is on the second floor.
It's a good value: just slightly more
expensive than my favourite guesthouse in Banglamphu (50 Baht more),
but including breakfast and free wifi.
The room itself is ok-size, ensuite
bathroom , has air-conditioning, a fridge, safe and TV- no need for
the latter. It's very clean.! What's also great about it, there's
wifi on the room:). Staff is friendly but not heartly, food is
delicious.
As I am a complete stranger to that
area I decided to go for a walk.Went to the next 7/11 nearby.I bought
a Thai sim-card and some charged some credit. Called Luck and her
voice sounded really heartly, welcoming me. Called a few Thai friends
as well. After 2 bottles of beer Singha and a delicious Green Chicken
Curry I enjoyed the wifi on my room, which is ok speed for Thailand-
hey on my room not in the lobby!
Although being quite tired, sticky and
only having slept a few hours I went out to have another meal. Just a
noodle soup would do. I ordered a bowl at the next food stall nearby.
Honestly it was an disappointment. The Thai man's soup next to me
looked much more delicious.
Speaking Thai helps! Especially in
Thong Lor, which is not a typical tourist area. Chatting with the man
I found out what was missing in my soup: blood!
Knowing this I ordered my soup to be
„nam tok“- with blood and...it tasted way better than before!
Thong Lor is a pretty busy Thai
business area not right in the city centre, but this can be reached
by skytrain within 5 mins. There is a luxury Spa and luxury cars are being sold here and just around the corner I saw a poor guy sleeping on the street. One can see street vendors selling food,
incense and flowers like anywhere in Bangkok but not the typical
tourist things that you see in Khao San road or Siam .
Finally I went to bed early at about
10pm and as it is really quiet I slept like an angel.
I woke up very refreshed at 6am
already, had a shower and a small breakfast. I met u cool Japanese
guy for breakfast- he's a Jazz musician and combined travelling and
working in a nice way. He's been to Thailand many times and it was
nice to have an early morning chat with him sipping my coffee.
Afterwards I went to the bank and got some cash.
I was going to meet my friend Mam for
lunch. Her office is actually not only nearby my hotel, it's just 1
minute around the corner. In the afternoon she will be busy preparing
the dinner party for her company so it's nice we could meet for
lunch.
It started to rain, actually the
weather is all I can complain about. It doesn't rain hard but quite
often, the rest of the day is cloudy. I think I glimpsed the sun just
once this morning for about 5 minutes.
Finally I met my friend Mam- she looked
stunning in her uniform. You wouldn't guess from the picture below. We
had really delicious and inexpensive Pad thai chao lay (seafood) at
a local restaurant, talked a bit and took a few pictures.
Unfortunately her lunch break was over already.
What had been a lot for Mam, was just
an appertizer for me. I had some more food, Laab Muu(spicy pork salad
with Thai herbs) at the hotel and I think I'll have another plate of
that delicious Pad Thai later on:)
