Sydney was a rather crazy, busy and somewhat drunken couple of days - none of which was either planned or intentional, but boy did we have fun! It started off on day one with us taking a stroll into town to check out the obligatory tourist sites (Sydney Opera House, Darling Harbour, Manly Island, The Bridge etc etc) and finding $150 lying on the pavement! After asking around if it belonged to anybody and nobody claiming it, we pocketed it and felt not only lucky but very excited at the thought of an extra $150 extra to our daily budget - which I may add is less than that!
Met up with an uncle, William, (yes I have family EVERYWHERE in Australia) for lunch and he suggested we head over to Manly Island before checking out the rest of the sites. In fact, as those of you know who have been to Sydney, if you get a ferry to Manly, you pretty much get to see all the main sites from the ferry - tres convenient! A very good friend of mine, who I hadn't seen in 12years, lives on Manly and, as luck had it,she was available to meet up with us for a couple of hours at the harbour.
What a reunion: we hung out all those years ago in Dublin and travelled together to the states and Mexico, 12 years on and the beautiful Tara Star is married with four children but exactly the same, and I am...still travelling...no comment! Very special to catch up, pick up from where we last left off, and sad to have to say good bye again after such a short time.
And so it starts...ferry back from Manly (would be a good idea to drink mini bottle of bubbly in 20min flat), pop up bar El Loco at the Opera House (yes lets drink $10 glasses of wine cause we can), meet up with Taz, who (after a few G&T's at The Opera Bar) is up for showing us a bit of Sydney rather than having dinner, hide under nearest table (Tazz and I) when Chris recognises Wayne Ferreira across the way and goes up to speak to him (blind) and end up dancing the night away at an underground whiskey bar until the wee hours of the morning, managing to easily spend our $150 "bonus" AND lose our brand new phone we had just purchased in Perth.
It had to be done, we had a fabulous evening and many a laugh. Thank you Tazzle!
Day two, hot and hanging we headed to Bondi Beach where the family live. Hung out with them for a couple of hours, met a cousin I'd never met, very cool, and went and sweated out the previous nights alcohol on Bondi beach for the day. Had a few drinks with the family, Tazz and some friends of Tazz's at the famous Iceberg Hotel on Bondi and headed home for an early night...or so we thought!
I'm sure we started with a cup of tea when we got back to Tazz's place but we ended up with at least four empty bottles of red wine, an overflowing ashtray, a sore stomach from all the laughing - thanks to one of Tazz's flatmates and Chris hitting it off, and a few sore heads the next day.
Again, totally worth every minute and another fabulous send off...though we have said:
To Be Continued on arrival in Sydney in a couple of weeks on route to Auckland, bring it on!
