We managed to squeeze a little bit of sight seeing in on our second day in Lijiang before getting the bus to Qiaotou. We power walked up the cobbled steps to the 'Looking at the Past Pavilion', a relatively newly constructed pagoda perched on top of a hill looking over the rooftops of Lijiang. The pagoda was four storeys high and although it didn't serve as much religious wise it did house three floors of Chinese art and calligraphy for sale. As we'd been pushed for time so we visited it at lunchtime and found the place deserted, which was such a nice change from the jam-packed alleys below us. Just as on our first day we were enjoying a quick lunch just to look around and find that numerous cameras were pointed in our direction. What celebrities we are.

The bus to Qiaotou, a village just on the outskirts of Tiger Leaping Gorge where the majority of people start the walk was only a couple of hours long and so not so shabby at all. We paid a 5 fee each for entering the Gorge (the fee is mainly to fund the maintenance of the new road running a long the bottom of the gorge because it certainly wasn't for the maintenance of the foot path).

We stayed at Jane's GH in the village that night before setting off the next morning as we'd heard the place supplied good info concerning the hike. The famous Jane wasn't actually there but we still picked up a vague, smudgy photocopied map of the trail and they kindly stored our big rucksacks for us. When we arrived two Irish guys who had in fact been on the train with us the other day had just returned from the gorge having completed the two day hike in one day! We were pretty impressed but there was no way we were going to attempt that as they were obviously 100 times more physically fit (and superhuman) than us.

We had the GH all to ourselves apart from the management's friends that were visiting, who talked loudly ALL night in the bedroom next to us. They forced me to get up and bang on the door until they shut up. Something I've never actually done before but I hadn't had a soft mattress and an unblocked nose for a week and that one nights sleep was  very important to me.
