Elegance Hotel Hanoi

We made the short flight from Vientiane to Hanoi...about one and a half hours. We had already decided to stay at the Elegance hotel 4 in Hanoi after reading great reviews on tripadvisor.com and they arranged a car to pick us up from the airport. We found our driver and headed out of the airport.....the hour journey to the hotel was an eyeopener for me....the Vietnamese are crazy drivers, scooters outnumber cars by ten to one, and they all drive like they are the only ones on the road....everyone honks their horn continuously and I had to cover my eyes so many times I lost count....how we didn't hit someone was a miracle. Chris found it highly amusing as he had experienced the Vietnamese drivers before...I was just glad when we started to hit the city limits and we started to slow down a bit!

When you first get into the city of Hanoi it is disorientating...the narrow streets of the old quarter and lined with so many shops and roadside cafes, where people squat on tiny stools in huge groups, trickling over the pavement. The hustle and bustle is like nothing I have seen before. The amount of traffic is immense, with hundreds of scooters squeezing through tiny gaps, no traffic rules, or no one pays any attention if there are any. So much for your eyes to take in, it can get a little overwhelming. After a while battling the swarms of scooters we arrived at our hotel down a small alleyway. The hotel itself was lovely. New, clean and with a computer and internet provided in your room. We dropped off our bags and decided to explore the streets.

Walking the streets is no less overwhelming...noise everywhere and hundreds of people swarming past you like ants...we found a nice restaurant a couple of streets away from our hotel. When we left the streets had quietened down slightly but the humidity and heat still made me feel slightly claustrophobic.

The hotel had advised that unfortunately we could only stay one night as they were fully booked, so we decided to move onto the Hilton Hotel the next day....I think we were getting used to a bit of pampering....but also the Hilton was situated outside the bustle of the old quarter.

In the morning we checked out and took the short taxi ride to the Hilton. The hotel was situated next to the opera house and looked pretty impressive. We were not let down...lush room, pool, room service....The next couple of days we took a trip to a couple of shopping malls, relaxed by the pool, walked around the lake and sat in a bar overlooking the crazy traffic. Generally chilling out. It was one of the longest times we have stayed in one city and by the end of the five days we had run out of things to do.....but felt pretty relaxed!
