Yes, the Sound is amazing. Yes, sea kayaking is great but Milford generally is a bit overhyped. Approximately 110 coaches a day of mostly Japanese tourists wind their way along the road. The track apparently has a two year waiting list in summer time and the sandflies are annoying little buggers.

Go to Milford for the day but staying there is quite hard work. Milford has one pub, one hotel and one shop (in the hotel), and as far as I could see only two houses. Driving in is ok but if you bus it in then getting anywhere to hike is difficult.

But the views are definitely breathtaking.
