After spending a couple of days with Guy, it was off to the South Island to explore and see if it was more topographically exciting than the North Island. First stop was Picton and the Queen Charlotte Track. The Queen Charlotte is like luxury tramping (as the Kiwis call hiking). You spend the day hiking with a day pack and then can turn up at a hotel or hostel where your bag has been dropped off and sit in the evening by an open fire drinking beer and eating proper food. Then they will prepare you a packed lunch for the following day, give you breakfast and off you hike again with just day pack. Big pack is transferred by boat to your next accomodation. Quality plan.
Hiking is so much easier with a little pack and the rainforest and views are awesome. The trail winds up to the tops of hills and then down to the waters edge. Only saw about four people in three days of hiking. In season it would be busy but off season its great.
