Christine and Mark the amazing hosts they are have booked us a Whooping crane tour leaving from Rockport. These birds are #2 on the most endangered list (#1 being the California Condor, which may I add we saw at the "World Center for Birds of Prey" earlier on this trip in Boise) They can be up to 5 feet tall with wingspans of about 7 feet so that is pretty cool.

To nourish ourselves before the boat ride we went to one of Mark and Christine's favorite BBQ joints called "The Shack" because before there was a proper restaurant it really just was this little shack/hut. We decided to be more authentic and order from the shack and sit outside. The weather was pretty sunny so a nice change from our last few chilly days.

I asked what the difference between small and large was for the sandwiches and the lady replied that the "large is like a Whataburger and the small is like a Whataburger Jr." Had I not eaten a Whataburger the previous day this info would have been no use to me but this worked perfectly today.Bring on the LARGE!

It was all delicious and very cheap, the perfect combo. Mark had said the three things they do really well in Corpus are BBQ, Mexican and Seafood and thankfully 2 of the 3 are pretty inexpensive.

Next a quick bathroom stop before hopping on the boat. Christine opened and closed a port-a-potty door quickly and decided that sneaking into the hotel across the way to pee would be a much healthier choice. While we were gone Chris was curious to see why it was so bad so he apparently poked his head in quickly and said "woooah". That man is a glutton for punishment.

We boarded the boat and realized we were with some serious birders who came equipped with super scopes and mega camera lenses. It was a nice clear day and felt good to be on the water. Within a couple of minutes there was a pod of bottle nosed dolphins at the side of the boat which was pretty awesome.

We then saw tons of different birds - Oystercatchers/Kingfisher/Vultures/Herons/Osprey/Pelicans and most importantly the Whooping Crane. The 'whoopers' were impressive. It was fun to watch them digging out blue crabs from the mud and tearing into them. At one point I actually started suffering from arm fatigue due to holding up the binoculars to my eyes. So I am not yet a birding pro but obviously on my way.

Our boat captain said it best when he declared that this was some "hot birding action" and that it was not often you could say you've had a "two crane day"  (Whooping and Sandhill Cranes...whoop whoop!)

Finished off the evening strolling around the pretty beachy artist town of Rockport and grabbing a delish snack of you peel 'em shrimp and a questionable plate of 'ribbers.' Tine insisted on ordering the ribbers without knowing what they were. Everyone should do this at least once...maybe. :)

A BIG thanks to Christine and Mark for having us and showing us around town in style.
