We said previously that we would be driving through the rest of Kentucky, but I think this state had a different idea. After being wrongly informed by enterprise rent a car that we could travel into Virginia with the rental, Merrill was forced to return the truck to Pikeville, or face a $1 per mile penalty. Not only was Pikeville off route 25 miles, but it was an extremely dangerous area to ride in. Once again we were stopped in KenStucky. On the bright side our room faced an amazing valley on mountains. You can really see why they call the Kentucky Appalachians the smoky mountains. The fog and clouds draped over the mountain tops of green masses of trees. The town of Pikeville was sunken into a narrow valley in the secluded mountains. Great location, just not for cyclists with thousands of coal trucks passing through daily. What to do? Finally, much to our dismay, we were forced to rent a Uhaul and drive into Virginia. Live to ride another day!
