We couldn't find any accommodation in Palm Springs but we found what turned out to be a fantastic hotel close by in a place called Indian Wells.  This hotel had seven swimming pools, one of which had a massive plasma screen at the end of it, playing cartoons and children's films.  I've never seen that before! Not even in the adult playground of Vegas.  We were upgraded to a beautiful split level room with doors to our own little bit of patio and just across from the tree lined pools.  The weather was hot and sunny and what a relief to be away from Vegas, with yet more exciting things on the horizon and a life story which is developing and growing all the time.

We ate in the hotel restaurant, on an outside table with a view over the garden and into the bar. Well!  What we encountered was what an American sitcom could easily be based on.  There was a live band playing in the corner just by our seats.  The band members were no spring chickens but clearly had a huge and adoring fan base right there in Indian Wells.  The first thing we noticed was what looked like, and clearly thought of themselves as, professional dancers, doing the tango and foxtrot to the sixties songs being annihilated by the band.  These handful of men and women were dressed for the occasion with shirts and smart slacks and low cut tops and swirly skirts. They held the floor for a little while, choosing different partners to pull onto the dance floor with each different tune.  Until, that is, the true fans of the band started  drifting in, dressed to the nines, dressed to impress their favourite member of the band, with the singer receiving the most attention.  He received a stream of kisses, alluring looks and appreciative glances from the women who took their place on the floor and strutted their stuff that night.  The average age of this audience being, I would guess, 70ish.

At one point, the saxophonist decided to mingle and did a few twirls with his saxophone around the packed dance floor.  Then he came out onto the patio and stopped at our table blowing away into his sax with not a single note coming out of it.  He did manage to get a few tiny little trills with no particular tune you could identify, just before he took the sax out of his mouth and looked at us sincerely and said " you guys, y'ar beautiful, look at you"  and then disappeared back onto the "live" stage!

We called this place Cougarsville and what an amusing evening it was.  We couldn't take our eyes off the show that unfolded on the dance floor as various admiring females drifted over to the stage to touch, kiss, cuddle and flirt with the band that wasn't actually playing a single note.

We were in California after all, the state where no one grows old.
