We hit upon the last town to resist the construction of interstate I 40 which decimated the original Route 66. The people of Williams petitioned and protested until they were given the concession of three exits from the highway, funnelling travellers to the town and keeping tourism alive on the iconic Route 66. Williams is a shrine to Route 66 and every shop, lodging and restaurant displays Route 66 memorabilia. It's like stepping back into the 50's and what a totally unexpected treat for us! We had originally wanted to do part of Route 66 but had to reluctantly drop it from our tour, so this was a real bonus. I hope a little of the spirit of Williams is captured in the photos because it was a great little place with huge amounts of character
In the morning, after staying in a crappy little motel on the edge of town, we had the best bagels I've ever had in a little cafe in Williams, freshly baked every morning - Jalapeņo and cheddar Mmmmmmm dee-lish-us.
Wow. This sticking pins in maps business is fun! And, again, dare I say, we struck very very lucky and enjoyed every minute of our limited time in Williams, but with the Grand Canyon and Vegas beckoning, we returned to the road again, all the better for our detours.
