Where I stayed
Lucca is an old city contained within a city wall, this wall is about 3km long, and there is a tree lined walkway on the top which is great for evening walks. We have walked almost the whole length of it now in our travels. The old city within these walls has several tall towers. We climbed one with trees on top. Firstly this was unique, but also it was good to sit up there and have some shade from the sun. We just watched the city below us.
We are staying at Da Elisa alle Sette Arti which is a guesthouse. Make sure they know when you are arriving as they are only at reception at those times. We happened to get the corner room which had windows over two streets, and we spent alot of time watching the world go by, they had some sort of festival with everyone in traditional dress. It is such a pleasant place to be after the crowds of FLorence. The guesthouse has a cute little kitchen so we went to a local deli/supermarket near the Piazza Anfiteatro (what I call the circular square, buildings built on the foundations of an old roman arena) to get some supplies - the mozzarella in Italy is so great it is addictive, it is so much better than anything you can get in NZ.
