We reseached the best way take on New York... there is no best way.
We found a place (Princeton) just outside of New York, it was very nice, quaint and friendly. We then caught the train from Princeton station it arrives at Manhatten Square Gardens, you can walk to Times Square, Chelsea Pier, its in the shopping area and near to buses and the metro. New York is jammed packed full of people, traffic and buildings. It has everything. It is amazing and fairly easy to get around ONCE you get the hang of it. A definate 7. BUT if you want to enjoy shopping and relax a little bit more than the Big Apple allows you to, then San Fransiso is better. (Just my opinion).
We walked and walked, we were there when the steam pipe exploded but we didnt know it had, we heard reports whislt on the underground that a station had been closed and we saw a convoy of about 20 ploice cars with their sirens heading off somewhere, we just thought it was coffee break. There are tour buses that take you to points of interest at every hour and hotels everywhere.
What they dont tell you:
The trains are quite slow
