Home to Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms and Strauss it is not hard to see why Vienna is known for its music. But other than enjoying it, we have to confess we don't know a lot about music. The city was also home to someone of equal or even more importance than these musical masters - Ludwig Wittgenstein. He might not quite be as mainstream famous as Mozart or Beethoven but Wittgenstein is the world's most important philosopher of the 20th century and, second only to Ronald Dworkin, was the inspiration for my (Chris) masters thesis. While I assure you he had nothing to do with my masters, Vienna was incidentally also home to Freud.

The first full day we visited the Schönbrunn Palace, the imperial residence of the Habsburg dynasty and dating back as early as 1548. It has an unbelievable 1,441 rooms, all elaborately decorated.

The second day we lead ourselves around the city's most notable historic buildings. Needless to say it took all day! Everywhere you look there is another architectural masterpiece and all on such grand scales!

As our walking tour took so long, we decided to spend another night in Vienna before heading to Budapest in Hungary. We couldn't stay at our current hostel as they were fully booked but managed to find one just around the corner. It turne out to be an apartment... which was almost as big as our one in Auckland! We even splurged and paid for our laundry to be washed. It was like Christmas morning when I picked up our machine washed and dried clothes - pure luxury!

Time for our last Austrian train, this time heading west to Budapest. As an aside, while waiting on the platform for our train to arrive, we saw a very well dressed women wearing a small front pack with... wait for it... the smallest dog you have ever seen sitting inside it! While we'll have to change euros to forint, its so great not having to bother with passport control!
