Where I stayed
Semporna is a little port town with nothing but a few dive shops but it is the gateway to the Semporna Archipelago. We came here to do more diving as the dive sites are supposed to be world class. We had a couple of dive companies recommended to us so we checked those out but the best place seemed to be Singamata. We ended up getting half price accommodation for the first night and the next day we arranged to do 4 dives for 300 ringgit, including free accommodation and food so we got a really good deal.
We caught the speedboat over the Singamata which took about 10 minutes from Semporna and when we arrived the place looked beautiful, we certainly weren't expecting it to be so amazing! It is a resort built on stilts over the ocean like a little water village. It had a restaurant, lots of different sun decks, diving board, aquarium and hammocks in the sea, it was total paradise. We checked into our room which was great too with our own deck chairs over looking the sea, the place was perfecto.
The first afternoon we just chilled out on our deck chairs and read our books, did lots of swimming and diving off the diving board! It was great fun. All meals are included in the price of the room as is tea, coffee, water, bananas and biscuits all day so we were happy! The food was delicious and lots of choice so we had a great dinner!
The next day we arranged a dive trip. We headed out early to Mabul island and did 2 dives around the island. The first dive was great and we saw lots of huge schools of fish.loads of different kinds of nudibranch and some massive groupers, the groupers were at least 1 metre long and really fat. The second dive was the best, we saw 6 turtles, more nudibranch, loads and loads of fish and really colourful corals, it was definitely one of the best dives we have ever done. The turtles were the highlight, they are so cool and move really gracefully it was awesome.
After the second dive we came back to Singamata for some lunch and did our next 2 dives around the Singamata reef. The dives weren't as good as Mabul but we still saw loads of colourful reef and tonnes of fish. We saw loads of camouflaged fish like the crocodile fish, lizard fish and another huge grouper that kept following Em. There was loads of random stuff at the bottom too like wooden frames filled with tyres and Chris even found a combination safe!
After the 4 dives we were absolutely exhausted, the most dives we have ever done in a day is 2 so we were nackered. We watched the sun set and chilled out for the remaining of the day before having dinner and watching the footy but the less said about that the better. That night Em got woken up by another mouse in her hair (surely that shouldn't happen to someone twice in a lifetime?!) but it was good timing as the sun was just coming up so we watched the sun rise which was absolutely gorgeous, best sunrise ever the colours were amazing!
It was a beautiful day so we just sunbathed and relaxed all day. We did a bit of snorkeling in the aquarium and around Singamata. The aquarium was brilliant as it is stocked with huge fish, the biggest fish we have ever seen, huge groupers and a massive bumphead parrot fish which was really cool. The snorkeling around the resort was really good too, although there were some really aggressive fish that kept trying to attack us which was quite amusing. The reef had loads of really nice corals and tons of small fish, we came across a huge school of barracuda which was cool, you can see them on he surface stalking the smaller fish. We had a really relaxing day swimming, lying in the hammocks, diving off the board and sunbathing was great.
We reluctantly left the next morning as we had a flight to catch from KK. So glad we found Singamata as the place is absolutely brilliant. The staff are so friendly and welcoming, we met some really great people there, the food is delicious and the place is just great. The diving we did was excellent too but most of all we just enjoyed relaxing there, can't recommend the place enough - amazing.
We are heading back to Indonesia now to meet Chris parents, can't wait. Borneo has been excellent, we have really enjoyed it here. It is a little difficult for independent travelers and a little expensive but despite this we had a great time.
