I currently staying in the Sepilok Jungle Retreat Lodge which actually looks like it could be in the jungle. It definitely has a few of the animals. I known this as I was woken this morning by a lizard crawling up my leg. At least I think it was a lizard. It felt too heavy for the usual gecko. Anyway, a quick scissor kick and it flew across the room, hit the wall and scurried away. This has done the trick because I haven't seen it since.

I also came across a scorpion last night. To precise, I almost stepped on a scorpion last night. I was quite surprised as I had only been warned about the snakes. So one of the members of staff at the hostel and I tried to catch it using special equipment - a plastic bag (to be honest - I just held the torch. The staff member got the bag duties). This is why I always check under the bed before I go to sleep.

The first stop of the day was the Sepilok Orang-Utan Rehabilitation Centre. This is located about 200 metres from where I am staying. There was a museum and a video before we went to see the morning feeding. This is for orangutans that have been raised at the centre and released into the wild. The newly released tend to come back for food. Some of the others still come back if the forest is short of food. Normally visitors can expect to see two or three organutans. As the feeding went on eleven showed up! One of them was an escaped baby from the centre.

Next I caught a bus to Sandakan. This is the main town in the area and to be honest, there's not much here. So I'm hiding from the heat in this internet cafe, checking emails and updating this site. I'll be heading back to Sepilok tonight, then back here tomorrow to get a bus to Semporna then the island of Pulau Sipadan.
