Well my goal has been reached and in reaching it I realize that the goal was not one of milage, speed or time, but one of exploration of my boundaries. We all live within sets of routines that define our daily lives. After awhile we become so accustom to them that we don't even realize that we have set these boundaries around ourselves. We are lucky because here in the U.S. we have freedom to step outside our well worn pathways and take a road less traveled to use another's phrase. That's what this trip was about, stepping out alone on a bicycle and experiencing the textures of the journey. I learned what it was like to be left alone with my thoughts for hours as I cycled along a lonely mountain pass, no texts, no emails, no phone reception at all. I was able to hear the grasshoppers and locusts "clack" as I surprised them along an embankment. I saw the look on a trouts "face" as he was wriggling in the talons of an osprey. I enjoyed a waterfall sometimes for miles before I could hear it or felt the mist on my skin. Most of all by camping in group campsites for Hiker/Bikers I started some great friendships and had the opportunity to share in someone else's journey.
Thoughts while pedaling: If you have ever thought about or dreamed of a long cycling tour, backpacking trip, canoe or kayak adventure my advise is to do it. Don't wait for everything to be perfect, because it's the imperfections of the journey that most often leave the most wonderful memories in their wake.
With that I'll be ending this blog to be replaced with another journey in the future, because this wandering Hobo/Hobbit/Ewok is already beginning to get an itch for another adventure. I think tomorrow I'll take a well deserved Zero Day!
