Today I got a late start because after 2 weeks on the bike I have finally figured out what I need and don't need. So I started by designating one pannier to what I'm going to send back home from Bend. I figure I just lightened my load by about 10-12 lbs. I can't wait to get it in the mail tomorrow.
I traveled the Cascade Lakes Hwy. all day today. It is the most beautiful area and road I have ever ridden! There are around 100 lakes all up at 4000-5000 ft. and easily accessible from Bend, OR within an hour (by car). I only could see about 8-10 lakes as I traveled down the road but with the high snow covered peaks all around and the wonderful volcanic landscapes they all were just spectacular. It made my 71 miles a pleasure to ride, at least until I had to climb Mt. Bachelor at mile 50. Oh well you have to pay to play as they say.
The most amazing thing that happened today. I had stopped to talk to a south bound lady cyclist this morning and it turns out she graduated from Folsom High School (now Sutter Middle School) in 1953! Her name is Mary and she is traveling from Helena, WA south on the SCR to go to her 60th Class Reunion! I was just flabbergasted, and didn't know what to say. She said she did it for the 50th Reunion and she would try it again this time. I as a gentleman didn't ask her age but she must be between 76-78 years old. I felt like I might be to old for this kind of travel but apparently I am not!
Thoughts while riding: 78 years old! I'm dumbstruck!
