August – Ossett
Over the last few weeks we have both really enjoyed staying with my parents in Ossett. Not only have we appreciated sleeping in the same bed for a length of time we have also enjoyed the other benefits that come with staying with them. Mum has done a great job in feeding us up and has made the effort to get anything that we desired including making me my very own chocolate cupboard! She has also lent us her car whenever we have wanted it even when it has not really been that convenient for her so we could trip about the country. Dad has played his part too treating us to numerous meals out, Sheffield Wednesday games and also paying for the whole party in the hotel in Bradford. It has also been really great to spend some time with my brothers and sister and their partners doing fun stuff like mini-golf, going to the movies, playing cricket in the park and having a few drinks. We have all changed so much in the last 5 years, it is a shame that we don’t see them as much as we would like but NZ is home for us and it is very far away! Hopefully, we can catch up regularly over the next few years.
Being so close to Doncaster we also got to see a bit of Cesca’s extended family too. Her grandparents were in fine form and we enjoyed several meals with her uncles from both her mum’s and dad’s side of the family. It was great to see them all and hopefully we can catch up with them all again if they come out to NZ or if not the next time we make it back to Yorkshire.
The other side of being in Ossett so long was that we got the chance to see our friends at least once. We managed to get to see Anna and Simon twice, Craig numerous times and JBA and Mark in Peterborough at the Scamps reunion. Also, it was fantastic to catch up with Alex and Claire in Southampton and get to visit Cesca’s brother, sister-in-law and godparents. At the 30th party Nick, Filthy and Cuv managed to find some time to visit – unfortunately we didn’t get to spend as much time together as we would have liked but it was still great to see them. The most amount of time we have spent with our friends we have spent with Huw, Camilla (Millsy), Normy, Dan (Winky) and Jenny in and around the centre of the universe with week on the canal in France thrown in. We have met up regularly in ‘The Taps’ on Friday nights sampling Ossett’s finest ales and showed Flockton how to quiz on Wednesdays. Also, we enjoyed memorable big nights out in Bradford and Leeds (ending in a curry house at 4am) and have even been for a couple of more relaxed meals out and to the movies. For fun we went ten-pin bowling – with Huw and Millsy showing us how it was done, and we even helped Normy pick up thousands of pebbles in Winky’s garden when we had a couple of spare days. For our last night in the UK Cesca and I caught the train down to London to stay with Brad and Kylie. The plan was to see a musical but that didn't work out so we ended up at Notting Hill Carnival instead. This was madness - a huge section of London was split off for fun, music, drinking and food. We joined in going to see a house/dance dj play down the end of a street that was jam packed.
Hopefully, Huw and Millsy will stop in to visit us in Nelson on their way home to Oz and we will meet up with the rest of all our friends again soon somewhere in the world.
