Wow! We have just gotten back from the best meal I've ever had in my life and amazingly it cost the grand total of £7.50 for both of us to be absolutely stuffed.
We are in the home of the crab - Kep. The day's events we'll get to later but more about the meal - Alice brace yourself.
A local guide book informed is that the ropiest looking dives were the best to dine at in the crab market. We scoped them out for the one with bare wooden tables, concrete floors and only canned drinks available. It looked drab but boy, in the midst of a stunning sunset we'd found heaven.
We ordered small portions of a few dishes and a mountain of food arrived. The centrepiece - sticky freshly caught whole crab, covered in onion and fresh green peppercorn sauce. Expected to eat it with our hands, we cracked, sucked, gnawed and licked our way to heaven. Accompanying the crab was fresh grilled squid with greens and noodles in yellow bean sauce - not the crap sort you get at the Chinese, but lush rich and fresh (yes there's a theme) sauce. Finally a small (serving)bowl of Tom yam shrimp soup, which was warm and had a consumee look with vegetables. Combined it was an incredible feast and from the word go we had our hands covered in sticky sauce so could only photograph our empty plates.
I've convinced Chris that we want to explore some more sights here if only to head back to the crab market. Travelling is not for the thin.
